Every week me and Monkey take part in Mummy Meditations – a wonderful way of spending time with God whilst also raising children. Each month we focus on a different fruit of the spirit and each week we look closely at just one bible verse. This month we are looking at the fruit of goodness.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:16
If you read my blog regularly you’ll know that Monkey is a big fan of Listener Kids. Whenever we look at anything new from the bible together we always try to find one of their videos to watch. Monkey loves to sing along and they are a great way to introduce ideas to her. As we started looking at this verse together we watched “This Little Light of Mine”.
Monkey loved stamping her feet and clapping her hands in the middle of the song. But after we’d watched it a few times she began to talk more about the message of the song. She wanted to know who the light in the video was. I explained to her that Jesus is the light of the world and that as Christians we have Jesus in us, his light shines through us.
A few months ago Monkey made a stained glass picture of Jesus at a church service for under 5s we attend monthly. She has always been very proud of this picture and kept it safe. I used this picture to help her understand this verse. We looked at the picture on the table and talked about how beautiful it was. We then held it up to the window and let the light shine through. We agreed that although the original picture was beautiful the light shining through made it even more so.
We are the same. People are beautiful but when they let their light shine it adds to their beauty. I explained to Monkey that she could let her light shine through the things that she said and the things that she did.
The verse tells us that when people see our good deeds they will glorify our Father in heaven. We did a torchlit treasure hunt to help Monkey understand this. I hid treats in her bedroom, turned all the lights off and gave her a torch. She had lots of fun shining her torch around and was very excited when she found her sweets.
While we enjoyed our sweets together we talked about how the good things we do are like the light, they can lead people to even greater things. People will see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven.
We did some more singing. This Little Light of Mine has become a big favourite but we also enjoyed Let Your Light Shine.
We finished off our week by making a paper candle to remind us to always let our light shine. We had so much fun with this verse and we’re looking forward to next week.
